Deep Belly Breathing Exercises to Improve Lung Capacity

web counter

So, you want to learn deep belly breathing and other breathing exercises to improve lung capacity, lower stress or boost overall health.

Here, we'll learn two breathing exercises, both of which improve lung capacity and lower stress.

The first is the diaphragmatic breathing technique, a deep belly breathing exercise. After that, you will learn pursed lip breathing exercises which are widely known to improve lung capacity.

Most of us breathe rather shallowly with the chest. This is the breathing most commonly associated with stress. It certainly is not known for its ability to improve lung capacity.

Deep belly breathing uses more of your lung capacity potential so that you absorb more oxygen into your system. This breathing exercise also trains the lungs to improve lung capacity.

Deep belly breathing means that your breathing is more centered. You are absorbing more oxygen.

You are also not pushing away life, but taking it in more fully.

Remember the last time someone called you a fool or a coward in one way or another? Remember the last uncomfortable situation you've been in? Do memories ever come up that you would rather not have?

How was your breathing in these situations?

When you don't want to feel something, your breath becomes more restricted.

Deep belly breathing is the antidote. The more you integrate it into your day, the easier it will be to accept life as it occurs.

Long and slow deep breathing can also be used to regulate blood pressure, heart rate, sleep patterns and much more.

Improved lung capacity has many benefits. When your lung capacity improves, your ability to take in life also improves. Breathing exercises are great ways to train the lungs so that you can live life more consciously.

The video below will show you how to do deep belly breathing through the nose without pursed lips.  Then, you will learn a pursed lip breathing exercise which will greatly improve lung capacity and the ability to live life to its fullest potential.

If you have troubles consistently following the instructions in the video, then try focusing on completely emptying the lungs during the exhale. When you do this, your lungs will fill up more deeply in the inhale.

The more you practice deep belly breathing, the more "bulletproof" you become. You will waste less energy during your day from discursive thought, reactions to unpleasant situations, etc. You will roll with the punches much easier and end your day with better clarity of mind, greater energy and less stress. If you have a meditation practice, then meditation will become so much easier for you. In the longterm, your lung capacity will also greatly improve.

Pursed lip breathing exercises, as mentioned earlier, are also known to improve lung capacity.

The inhale is similar to the deep diaphragmatic breathing exercise. Only the exhale is different.

Purse your lips like you're going to whistle. The lips are slightly puckered with just the slightest opening between them. Flute players will find this familiar.

Blow out through the mouth. Notice that your exhale is slowed down considerably. The outward airflow is slightly restricted. That's what you want.

Inhale again just as in the diaphragmatic breath and repeat the exhale through the mouth.

Perform this deep breathing exercise for a while, and you will, just like in the previous exercise, lower stress while improving lung capacity at the same time.

Deep belly breathing is just one part of an overall strategy to reduce stress in your daily life.

If you wish to improve lung capacity and reduce stress, I recommend a meditation program to accomplish both of these goals.
