In the past, whenever I looked for
ways to destress myself online, I quickly became very lost in dozens and dozens of websites. Almost every website offers
a small handful of meditation and Yoga resources. It can take hours to find what I'm looking for.
There are lots of free free meditation techniques and stress relief tips online. How many one-stop websites out there really
teaches you how to destress yourself in ways that work for your background, your temperament and your busy
lifestyle?
Think about all the activities you can do which are grounding, centering, balancing and calm the chatter of the mind -
even just a little bit. Gratitude visualizations, loving and kind thoughts toward your neighbors, yoga stretches, breathing
exercises, a favorite song from church, ecstatic poetry, peace prayers, memories of a favorite nature spot - these are all
ideas.
Now, think of all the times you spend waiting in line, in elevators, etc. Use these times as opportunities to read a few
lines of scripture or to breathe deeply and check in with yourself.
In addition to waiting periods, perform some of these techniques for two minutes out of every hour and you're well
on your way to learning how to destress yourself in any given moment. Little actions interwoven into your day, will create
a powerful momentum that just creeps up on you. After a couple days or a couple weeks, it will become so much easier to relax,
tune in and rejuvenate.
Warm ups involve similar actions that are performed in a sequence before sitting down to meditate.
A proper warm up strategy begins with gross, physical energy (Hatha Yoga, stretching, slapping and wiping the body,
etc.) and progresses toward finer and finer levels of being (intellect, emotions and energy, e.g. song, visualization,
reading inspiring text). We are moving toward stillness of mind.
The more you practice interweaves and warm ups, the greater the momentum you create. Soon, it will not matter how
much time you have in your schedule. Each little meditative act you perform will pave the way for the next until meditation
becomes an easy and natural part of your life.
