True Steps for You | Steps to Achieving Goals

Todd Schaefer, metaphysical author and host of the Spiritual Pants radio show, shares essential steps to achieving goals and identifies common barriers to achieving goals.

Today I am going to give a quick book publishing update, and then go into a longer post about why we do or do not take the steps that help us create what we want for ourselves.

Stretching the Comfort Zone

It has been a big stretch of the comfort zone the last couple of weeks, not because of the writing, but because of the expansion that comes with taking the next steps on the whole. Sometimes I ask myself, “What does taking this step mean for me?” Or, “Is this a step that I really want to take in my heart, or am I just doing it for my ego?” Answering as honestly as possible has always yielded the maximal gains in the long run, and I hate wasting time, so making the most spiritually feel good and self honoring choice is always the best one. Usually, this means utilizing a bit of courage, more or less.

Better Writing

As I’ve rewritten and edited some articles, the results have been pretty awesome. I’ve found ways to improve what I’ve written before, refine my tone and ideas, and bring the pieces together to work more cohesively. It’s been a major blessing to have the free guidance and support that I’ve had with such an awesome team who can assess my work and pull out more of the best in me, when I wouldn’t have known how to do so prior. For that, I thank my unofficial agent whom I’ve worked the most with thus far, Warren, for being so helpful and passionate about what he does in guiding authors.

At the Edge of Limitation

Let’s chat more about stretching the comfort zone. I find it important because it determines how far we take our talents. And if you are reading this, you probably want to know how you can apply this to your goals.

Taking a step into the unknown always forces us to stretch ourselves a bit more, even if we are confident with our craft. When we decide to take something good and make it better, we sometimes hit that mental “ceiling,” or the point which we hadn’t gone past before. This is the place that tells us, “I don’t know what to do next.” We may need guidance, or perhaps some fears are blocking us.

This is why it’s so important to follow our guidance. It’s because we only know what we know about ourselves and how we operate until we ask for further guidance from God in prayer or simply in asking ourselves for guidance and paying attention to what we begin to notice. “Why haven’t I moved further forward?” for example, doesn’t need to be questioned blamefully, but questioned honestly in assessing why our minds stay in the states of non-expansion that they do.

Take the Step Anyway

Once we decide to take the step anyway (and especially when our minds cannot justify the gain), we find that there was nothing holding us back from our expansion. If we want growth, expansion, healing, or whatever – we need to just take the next small step. Why? Because in limitation, we don’t yet know that there are steps we can take – but there are!

I’ve discovered the need for taking non-limiting steps with my writing in order to bring it to the next level for my development. In the passing of my limitations at this step, I’ve discovered that much discomfort has subsided and all that remains is a whole bunch of joyous steps that I can take in any direction with the publishing and writing process. My mind continually says, “Wow! I can do this and this or even this now!” Lots of possibilities unravel themselves when we choose to keep taking steps forward because we know we’ll feel better when we do, and the Universe and law of attraction reflect and support that.

Bottlenecking

In what I call “bottlenecking,” we follow our dreams until they get close enough to becoming a reality that our brain gets scared and stops. It says, “Whoa, this is getting too real, time to stop.” Then the fears of the dream becoming a reality overpower the passion for the dream coming true. This is where growth is mandatory in choosing courage over fear. This is where true self worth is revealed. There is no mistaking the tried and true success that comes with taking real, personal steps forward. Dreams and desires exist to guide us forward through the fears which tell us dreams don’t come true. As we commit to our dreams, we’ll learn if the dream was for our ego alone, or an expression of our spiritual desire.

So often, we wish for success or we see it in another, yet what we’re seeing is the desire for us to make it a reality for ourselves. We don’t do this because we haven’t yet taken the step for ourselves. Or we’ve taken some steps, but not all of the ones that we could. There is always SOME step that we can take in courage. This makes us feel good. Sometimes, we need a friend to help us see that we CAN take that step and that we are worthy of taking that step. This is different from convincing or fooling ourselves that we are taking a step. Do you see the difference? This could apply for anything: career, intimacy, relationships, you name it. In the bottleneck, we make excuses.

Self Honest Steps

I find the best recipe is always asking for God’s guidance, and then allowing that comfortable stretch to take us to the next step. Remember, we don’t have to “accomplish” anything to feel good about ourselves. If that were true, then our driving force would merely be ego compulsion. But we do need to be honest with ourselves in the steps that we are taking. Otherwise, we could take any old step but it may not make a difference for us. Each step is different for each person, and one step may not have the same meaning to another. Each step is very specific to the person. And again, our level of self honesty tells us just how true we are being to our path. True results are in our feelings about ourselves, and secondarily, what we attract.

Supported Steps

The beauty of it all is that steps taken with God/Source are always supported. And when we align with that mentality of taking those steps which align us with God and ourselves and not just aligning us with some “means to an end,” we are taking a step IN God which makes all the difference to our TRUE success as human beings, no matter what we do in our career, family, or what have you. In other words, steps aligned with ego which yield short-lived feel goods will leave us wanting and doubting. Steps that continue to carry us in good feelings are in alignment with God. High external success with no internal success is a tail-chasing game which can be played for a lifetime. This is why people with a lot of money can still be unhappy.

So, whatever that may be, choose the step that aligns you with your heart and joy and courage, and you with you. Whether that step seems small or whether it seems large, it will be worth it and you will feel and know the difference.
