According to the American Institute of Stress, stress in workplaces costs U.S. companies more than $300 billion dollars per year in the form of employee absenteeism, compensation claims, insurance rates, etc. One estimate breaks it down to $7,500 per employee per year. That's why companies such as Google implement meditation programs so that employees can learn to use stress management techniques at work and at home.

There are lots of stress management coaches who offer tips and advice for reducing stress at work through better communication, positive psychology and relaxation techniques.

It is great to learn a few communication and attitude tips and a couple of relaxation exercises and stress management techniques that help people at work. However, it is much better to develop stress management techniques that fit your unique disposition and lifestyle.

Do you want to develop lasting stress management techniques that help you to relax deeply and become more productive at work at the same time? Sure you do. Meditation is not a complete strategy in itself, but it is an excellent place to start.

Science now shows that meditation is one of the most effective ways for relieving individual stress and therefore stress at work. One employee who uses meditation as part of his/her strategy for stress management creates a powerful ripple effect that contributes to peace and productivity within the entire workplace. Imagine if 20% or 30% of employees meditate - or even 100%.

Meditation is not a religion or a philosophy. It is the experience of being present with yourself, with others and with your work. If you are religious, then yes, meditation can be religious, too. That's recommended. If you are not religious, then you can develop a program that suits your background.

There is generally an object of focus in any meditation technique. This can be your breath, a line of a prayer, a nonsense word, a mental image or anything you want. It can be a devotional object such as an image of Jesus or it can be a secular phrase such as "peaceful calm".

Here, you'll learn how to meditate. Then you''ll discover new ways of making meditation a much easier and more customized process with your own personalized stress management techniques that can be employed at work and at home.

In the following video, the object of focus is the breath. When developing your own stress management technique(s), you can change the object of focus to anything that suits you. If you're easily bored or drowsy, then try a mantra (a word or a phrase) or something that engages the mind.

In this exercise, you became very absorbed in the object of focus. This is the concentration element of meditation. When thoughts or emotions come up, you take note of them and allow them to be. This is Vipassana which means "seeing things as they really are". When you become present with your experiences and thoughts, they have less power over you. When you're not clinging to comfortable experience and pushing away uncomfortable experience, then you are training the mind to see things in a less distorted way, especially when your breath is deep and relaxed.

Meditation techniques are different than stress strategies. Stress strategies create a powerful momentum which makes stress management techniques and meditation easier in any given moment.

Integration strategies are strategies that you employ to integrate a meditative state of mind into daily life. Every religion teaches its own integration strategy. A Buddhist may watch his/her thought processes and activites as mindfully as possible throughout the day. Muslims pray as a group five times daily.  Stress management trainers also teach integration strategies in a more secular way.

Do you want someone else's integration strategies or do you prefer strategies that work for you?

Think of what turns you on personally? Is it a favorite religious song or an ecstatic poem? Is it a particular section of the Bible? Perhaps you have a favorite nature spot. Self massage may bring you into your body for a serene state of present moment consciousness. Yoga stretches may do the same. You may find that shaking tension out of your joints helps you to open up and embrace life. Do you have a favorite tree to hang out next to? All of these things can become stress management technique that you can perform at work and many of them are barely noticable.

Make a list of these things.

Now, how much time do you spend at traffic lights, waiting for elevators, etc? Other than that, can you take 2 - 5 minutes out of each hour to incorporate some of these calming, balancing and centering techniques?

There are many stress management techniques you can perform at work. It's just a matter of when and how to slip them into your day and whether the time and place is right for particular techniques.

You realize that you are not too busy to implement effective stress management techniques at work, right?

I challenge you to try this for at least 30 days and let me know how you feel. You will realize that with the right stress management techniques and strategies, you will create a powerful momentum of inner peace without even seeing the process. Most of the healing activity will occur behind the scenes - below the level of consciousness. Suddenly, your meditation will become much easier and your entire life will become much more productive, creative and clear. Then you know that your stress management techniques and strategies are working. Send me an email with your successful story.
